What score do you need on the final? Start with the weights

Your current average and the points already secured toward a course grade are different numbers. A current average normally divides by the weight of completed assessments. A final target must account for the remaining assessment too.

Calculate the contribution of each assessment

Suppose assignments are worth 40% of the course and your score is 80%. They contribute 32 percentage points toward the final grade. A midterm worth 40%, scored at 90%, contributes another 36. You have earned 68 points from 80% of the course, making the current weighted average 85%.

Solve for the final exam

If the final is worth 20% and your target course grade is 85%, it must contribute 17 points: 85 minus 68. Divide 17 by 0.20 to find a required exam score of 85%. Try this example in the grade and final-exam calculator.

The final-exam mode requires completed assessment weights plus final weight to total 100%. If there are several remaining assignments, combine them only when you want a single average target across that remaining weight. Do not enter a homework score as if it were the entire homework-category average unless that is how the course is graded.

Handle results outside the usual score range

A required result above 100% means the target is unreachable under the entered weights without extra credit or another policy change. A result at or below zero means the target is mathematically secured. Neither changes attendance requirements, minimum exam-score rules or other conditions set by an instructor.

Do not average unlike quantities

An unweighted average treats every score equally. A weighted grade gives more influence to assessments with larger course weights. The percentage calculator helps check a single contribution, but it does not replace the weight structure.
