How this percentage calculator works
Percent means per hundred. Choose the question first: a percentage of a value, a part as a percentage of its whole, a percentage change, or an increase/decrease applied to a starting value.
A worked example
15% of 200 is 30. Increasing 200 by 15% gives 230. Returning from 230 to 200 is a decrease of about 13.04%, not 15%.
Why are percentage increases and decreases different?
The base changes. A 50% decrease followed by a 50% increase turns 100 into 75. For signed starting values, this tool divides change by the absolute original value.
