Calculate two fractions
Integer inputs only. Results are reduced using the greatest common divisor; the denominator is kept positive.
How this fraction calculator works
For addition and subtraction, cross-multiply the numerators over a shared denominator. Multiplication multiplies the numerators and denominators. Division multiplies by the reciprocal of the second fraction. Finally, divide both terms by their greatest common divisor.
A worked example
1/2 + 1/3 = (3 + 2)/6 = 5/6. Its decimal expansion repeats; the fraction stays exact while the displayed decimal is rounded.
Can I enter negative fractions?
Yes. Enter a negative numerator or denominator. The simplified answer keeps any minus sign in the numerator. A zero denominator or division by a zero fraction has no defined result.
