How this tip calculator works
Start with the bill before sales tax. Choose whether the tip uses the pre-tax or after-tax bill, then divide the full total among the number of people. The tax and tip amounts remain visible so you can check the receipt.
A worked example
For an 80 bill, 8% tax and an 18% pre-tax tip, tax is 6.40, the tip is 14.40 and the total is 100.80. Four people pay 25.20 each.
What if the receipt already includes a service charge?
Check whether gratuity is already included before adding another tip. This tool does not infer restaurant policies. Rounding can leave a few cents to allocate when splitting a bill.
