How this ratio calculator works

A ratio compares relative quantities. Simplification divides both non-negative whole-number terms by their greatest common divisor. To split a total in the ratio a:b, allocate total × a/(a+b) and total × b/(a+b).

A worked example

The ratio 6:9 simplifies to 2:3. Dividing 100 in that ratio gives 40 and 60. Scaling both terms by the same nonzero factor preserves the shares.

Is a ratio the same as a fraction?

A ratio of 2:3 describes two parts. The first part is 2/5 of their combined total, not 2/3. Use the fraction calculator for arithmetic on fractions.
